DRIVERS faced miles of queues on the northbound M6 this morning after a plant machinery vehicle broke down in the roadworks.

The incident - between junctions 17 for Sandbach and 18 for Middlewich and Holmes Chapel - was resolved by 7am today, Friday.

By then, queues had already built to around three-and-a-half miles as police closed two lanes shortly afterm 6am to enable recovery of the vehicle.

The breakdown followed an overnight closure of the M6 north between junction 18 and 19, for Knutsford.

Overnight closures have taken place all week to allow for smart motorway works to take place.
