A MOORHEN entangled in a fishing line near the Red Lion has made a full recovery after a daring river rescue.
A walker spotted the moorhen struggling in the River Weaver on January 4, enlisting the help of a narrowboat owner with a kayak to save it from the water.
Taken to Winsford High Street Vets, the bird had lost blood supply to its leg and was transferred to Lower Moss Wood Wildlife Hospital in Ollerton, near Knutsford.
Following two weeks of TLC, the Moorhen recovered and was released back at the Red Lion.
Wildlife rescuer Ian Daniells said: “This poor bird was extremely lucky that observant members of the public found it before permanent damage was done.
"In these days of worries about plastics monofilament line can devastate wildlife, while the majority of anglers are line aware, some still discard line with such impact on our beautiful water birds.
“Moorhens pair up for life, so the death of one can be a disaster to the mate.”
Lower Moss Wood treats 2000 wildlife casualties each year. Call Ray on 01565 755082.
