A TEAM of sixth form students from Knutsford Academy has been working with the Knutsford Talking Newspaper to provide a new supplement called ‘Youth Speaks’ for its listeners.

The Talking Newspaper is provided free to residents in the area who have a visual impairment, and is also distributed to care homes.

The new supplement is being recorded on a monthly basis, in addition to the weekly paper which features a selection of articles taken from the Knutsford Guardian.

Academy students have been writing a range of articles on subjects such as ‘the grammar school debate’, music reviews and applying to university, and then recording them with the help and guidance of the Talking Newspaper team.

Sixth form student Rowan Perry said: “The recording team were really supportive when we were getting to grips with the process, we have all really enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to continuing to work on future issues of Youth Speaks.”

The support has also extended to the production of the Talking Newspaper itself with students helping with the recording of the paper, which is then sent out to its listeners on a memory stick.

Clive Howlett, chairman of Knutsford Talking Newspaper, said: “We have been really impressed with the commitment of the Knutsford Academy students and their desire to give something back to the local community.

“One of our listeners has already commented on the clarity of the reading from these young people and how nice it was to listen to.”
