THREE community groups in Middlewich are going head-to-head to earn shoppers' votes and receive a grant of up to £4,000.

Tesco has relaunched its Bags of Help scheme, which sees shoppers choose which group they want to see the top grant of £4,000 go to – with the other two groups receiving £2,000 or £1,000 depending on the number of votes they receive.

Throughout November and December, shoppers will be given a token to vote for Middlewich Cricket Club, Middlewich Additional Needs Network or the Middlewich Over 60s Club to get the top grant – with the money funded by the 5p carrier bag levy.

Middlewich Cricket Club wants to use the money to go towards completing its renovation of the clubhouse to form a community lounge.

Secretary Dave Parry told the Guardian: "The clubhouse is very tired, it's been there a long time, and we want it to look better than it is now.

"We want people to have functions and parties at the club, we want to be seen as a facility for the whole town and we want more people to use the facility."

Middlewich Additional Needs Network is a group which supports vulnerable children and adults with additional needs, such as autism or ADHD, who need a helping hand.

"The money that we are hoping to raise we are looking at taking a group of children to the Calvert Trust for an adventure weekend, so they can build up their confidence," said secretary Robyn Martland.

"It also helps to support adults and carers through team building exercises for families."

The Middlewich Over 60s Club, which has been running for 67 years this month, wants to use the cash to fund days out for its members.

"The cost of coach travel keeps going up, and I won't have our members paying more than £10 for a seat," said chairman Norma Taylor.

"We'd be happy just with the £1,000 – it's great to see three groups from Middlewich getting the money."
