A JACKKNIFED lorry caused traffic to grind to a halt on the Knutsford side of the Mere crossroads earlier today.

Reported to police at 12.22pm today, Thursday, the incident caused queues at all entries to the four-way traffic controls at Mere.

One driver caught up in the jam said a lorry attempted a three-point turn, becoming stuck across the carriageway between the crossroads and Clamhunger Lane.

David Trott said: "A lorry had tried a three-point turn and got beached on the grass verge.

"The problem was then up at the Mere, because you have got the four-way control and only one car can pass through at any one time.

"As soon as cars started trying to come through towards Knutsford, it was gridlocked."

After around half an hour of trying, David managed to turn around and head back towards the A556.

A Cheshire Police spokesman confirmed that the HGV had become stuck.

They said: "A large lorry was stuck across the road, with its wheels stuck in a ditch and smoke seen coming out of the vehicle."
