CHESHIRE East Council is looking to undertake repair work on the Bexton Road bus station after establishing that it was responsible for its upkeep.

The shelter, which backs onto Booths car park, has been subject to vandalism over the years and was left with graffitied woodwork, missing windowpanes and damaged ceiling tiles, prompting complaints from residents.

When approached by the Guardian and a resident in June, the council began investigations into whether it or Booths supermarket was responsible for repairs.

With Booths denying ownership, the council has undertaken provisional repairs at the shelter ahead of potential further work next year.

A CEC spokesman said: “The council has carried out necessary repairs to the roof of the shelter and will review the situation in the next financial year with a view to scheduling further work – budgets permitting.”

Peter Russell, a regular bus user, had called the state of the shelter ‘an absolute disgrace’ with both residents and visitors to Knutsford being put off as a result of the longstanding damage.

CEC’s financial year begins in April, with proposals set to begin emerging before Christmas.
