AN angry mum says she was confronted by ‘speeding motorists’ as she tried to use the Manchester Road zebra crossing last week.

Marie Hewitt, of Warren Avenue, was crossing the newly re-laid stretch with partner Ray and their eight month old daughter Renie, which at the time was missing painted lines - but still had the belisha beacons.

She said: “Because there were no road markings to indicate the zebra crossing, cars were speeding round the roundabout.

“Other drivers were too busy checking for traffic coming from other side streets to even notice that there were people using the zebra crossing.

“Some motorists were stopping while others were driving around the pedestrians, it was just crazy.”

Ms Hewitt said she believed that the road had been resurfaced the week before but she said the lines needed marking as soon as possible to prevent somebody being run over.

She explained: “Luckily, I have my wits about me but for an elderly person or for children using the crossing it’s a danger and I reckon somebody could be killed.

“You would have thought the council would have been able to do the new markings sooner.”   A Cheshire East Council spokesman confirmed that the lines had been repainted at the zebra crossing earlier this week, adding: “There was a couple of reasons why we didn’t paint the lines immediately.

“The first was because we have to let the tarmac harden and the second is because of a delay caused by the weather.”
