CHESHIRE East Council will salute the fallen of a World War One battle on Monday, July 31.

A ceremony at Wilmslow War Memorial, in Mill Street, will mark the centenary of the start of the Third Battle of Ypres - more widely known as Passchendaele.

The Royal British Legion, veteran groups, dignitaries will gather for a wreath laying at 2pm. Members of the public are warmly invited to attend.

CEC mayor Cllr Arthur Moran will lead the tributes to the fallen, with the Cheshire Regiment alone having lost 885 men in total during the battle.

Passchendaele was the name of the village destroyed before the battle ended on November 6, 1917.
