RESIDENTS are being asked to have their say on how they think cycling and walking infrastructure can be improved across the borough as part of a consultation.

This comes after the St Helens Council secured dedicated sustainable transport funding from the Liverpool City Region Local Growth Fund to improve the cycling and walking structure in the borough in the next four years.

This follows people in the region indicating that they are more willing to walk and cycle if they have better facilities to do so, via a survey.

Reducing car journeys, especially short journeys, is good for the environment, health, reducing congestion and supporting the local economy.

The proposed improvements will take place in the town centre and the east of the borough –and link into existing cycle and walking improvements to provide a network of routes.

Schemes include new and improved on and off-road cycling and walking paths, improvements to crossings and junctions and measures to address pinch points for cyclists.

The project aims to increase accessibility, connectivity and safety for cyclists and pedestrians.

Residents can have their say on proposals by taking part in an online consultation at bit.ly/2rYQBuC or by picking up a survey at the town hall reception or Haydock, Parr or Newton-le-Willows libraries.

The consultation will run until Monday, July 10.

Comments can also be sent to: Transport Planning Department, Town Hall, St Helens, WA10 1HP or email

There will also be a series of roadshow events early next month for residents to have their say, taking place at Newton-le-Willows Library on Monday, July 3 from 10am to 4pm and Haydock Library on Wednesday, July 5 from 10am to 4pm.
