TEN students from South Africa are set to join in the fun at Saturday’s Goostrey Rose Day celebrations.

The primary school pupils from Elizabethfontein Primary School, near the west coast of South Africa, are visiting their Goostrey counterparts as part of the two schools’ twinning programme.

This is the fifth visit they have made to Goostrey since the schools twinned in 2004, with the visitors enjoying trips to tourist hotspots across the country as well as gaining an insight into English school life.

The entire party of 12, including two teachers, will join the procession and dancing on Saturday.

In total, around 200 children are set to take part.

Abigail Burgess, 12, will be crowned Rose Queen accompanied by three attendants, Rebecca Main, Mika Mizunoue and Evie Thirlwell.

The Rose Bud Queen will be Moly Withe and her lady in waiting is Rosie Gyurkovits. There will be three attendants, Tiah Mills, Libby Hammond and Hannah Gray.

This year's Rose Day president, Martin Leake, has lived in Goostrey for more than 30 years.

The procession sets off from Booth Bed Lane to the school field at 1pm. The crowning ceremony will begin at 2pm.

Rose Day committee chairman Christina Burgess said: "Rose Day, which dates back well over 100 years, is a very special occasion for the village of Goostrey and so we are delighted that, yet again, so many children and young people want to be involved.

“We are delighted to welcome the children and teachers from our partner school in South Africa. They will be in the procession and will dance on the field after the crowning ceremony.”
