POLICE say they have seen a ‘massive decrease’ in motorists flouting the one-way system on a troublesome section of King Street.

Following numerous complaints from residents about vehicles turning right at the bottom of Minshull Street and into King Street – against the one-way system – police have conducted a series of spot checks.

With more than 30 drivers caught in the initial police operation, further monitoring has seen a fall in offences.

PCSO Gary Fulton from the Knutsford beat team said: “Although the decrease is significant, we will continue to monitor the area.

“After reports of near misses involving pedestrians we hope that drivers think in future before going against the one way signage which is in place for road safety purposes.”

Officers conducting checks said that many of those who have been caught turning right out of Minshull Street and down into Old Market Place are residents of the town.

PCSO Fulton added that regular enforcement will continue, with guilty drivers liable to prosecution or a fine.

Cllr James Power, from Knutsford Town Council, told the Guardian that a working group had been looking at the issue of Minshull Street - as well as focussing on other traffic issues in the town centre.

"The town centre working group of the Neighbourhood Plan will be looking at issues such as this," he said.

"There is some appalling driving through our town which does make things worse.

"I'm glad the police are tackling these problems head on and encourage anyone with concerns to report them."
