A PROPOSED rail strike set for next week has been cancelled in the wake of the Manchester attack.

Northern, Southern and Merseyrail had been set for disruption on Tuesday, May 30, with RMT members employed by Arriva Rail North planning to walk out for 24 hours.

However, in light of the Manchester Arena attack, the union has put plans on hold.

Mick Cash, RMT general secretary, said: “In light of the horrific bombing in Manchester last night, and the heightened safety and security alerts on our transport services, RMT’s executive has taken the decision to suspend the 24 hours of strike action scheduled for Tuesday 30th May on Merseyrail, Northern Rail and Southern Rail.

“Our thoughts and solidarity at this time are with the people of Manchester.”

The walk-out would have been the fourth in three months, following a lack of progress in talks over the future role over train guards, with Arriva keen to introduce at least 50 per cent driver-only operation on its services.
