AN actor and mountaineer is bringing explorer George Mallory home for a one-man play.

John Burns will perform Mallory: Beyond Everest at the Victory Hall, in Mobberley, from 7.30pm on Sunday, April 30.

In his fringe performance, George has survived his Everest expedition, and looks back over his life, loves and attempts on the highest mountain in the world.

John, who has toured the play across Britain, said: “I really feel I’m bringing George home.

“I know he would have wanted to come back to the village as the man who conquered Everest.

“He never got that chance but I’m sure Mobberley must have had a place in his heart.”

Mallory: Beyond Everest is John’s second fringe play, following the successful A Passion For Evil in 2010.

John is a mountaineer himself and an award-winning mountain writer, who uses his insight in the field to bring a unique perspective to the audience.

“I’ve always been fascinated by men like Mallory,” he added.

“He was prepared to face incredible dangers and unimaginable hardships to climb the world’s highest mountain.

“In my play George has survived what he called simply ‘the mountain’ and, as a man in his sixties knighted by the king and revered by the establishment, looks back over his life and loves.

“He is tortured by the loss of Sandy Irvine, the young Oxford oarsman he admired so much and ultimately led to his death.”

Tickets cost £10 for adults, or £5 for under-16s, and are available by calling 01565 874014 or 07831 812408.
