A GROUP of former Knutsford Academy students headed back to their roots recently, delivering a musical performance to mark the launch of a national DJ tutoring service.

FutureDJs, set up by two pairs of ex-Academy brothers, has been working alongside exams board AQA since it announced it would recognise turntablism on its new music GCSE syllabus.

The new business, made up of Shaun and Joe Marsden and Austen and Scott Smart, has also partnered with industry-leaders Pioneer DJ, and manned a pop-up booth at the Academy to boost interest in the subject.

Ryan Jessop, subject lead for music at Knutsford Academy, said: “As we now enter a digital age in all aspects of life, supporting students to explore new skills such as DJing and electronic music production is paramount in developing and nurturing their ability to tap into their personal expression, which grows self-confidence and social skills.

“We need to encourage all students to embrace any interest they have in music whether it be with contemporary or modern tools for both creation and performance.

“FutureDJs provides this additional exposure to any student who wishes to learn a new skill.”

Helen Mayne, head of performing arts, said: “We are delighted to have been selected as the pilot school for the FutureDJs roadshow launch in line with AQA.

“We are very much looking forward to watching our students hone and develop their skills on the turntables - who knows what new talents will emerge from the school."

More than 200 Knutsford students voiced an interest in the subject after the pop-up showcase, and FutureDJs now hopes to deliver a national programme.

Joe, a former freelance DJ tutor for schools in Manchester, says he had a 'lightbulb' moment when he heard the news that AQA were introducing the recognition of turntables within their GCSE syllabus.

He brought the idea to friends and DJs Austen and Scott, who count performing at iconic nightclubs such as fabric in London, The Warehouse Project in Manchester and Space in Ibiza among their achievements.

The final piece in the puzzle, Shaun brings with him business acumen and experience in the festival industry.
