HIGH Legh Community Association Charity is encouraging residents to help pull the community together as it sets out plans for an inaugural ‘Big Weekend’ in the village this May.

The Big Weekend is pencilled in for Saturday, May 13 and Sunday, May 14 – a showcase of the village’s traditional activities for residents and visitors alike to enjoy.

With community organisations working with the charity and parish council, an old London bus has been drafted in to ferry visitors around various events including a flower festival and village hall Sunday tea.

There is also a call to dot the village with creative scarecrows – a village tradition that it is hoped will now become part of a larger, all-inclusive community occasion.

High Legh Parish Council chairman Gail Coenen said: “We are really looking forward to giving visitors a wonderful experience of the range of special and traditional activities that we enjoy in our community.

“We find that for such a small village we have a close-knit community. We just thought it would be good to bring people together, to give groups and opportunity to raise some money bring more people into the village.

“We have secured an old London bus - free of charge, they will come for the two days and ferry people around the village. People will be able to have a ride on the old bus, go to these places and take advantage of activities.”

Walking routes will also be mapped out, with a full agenda currently being put together to make the most of the weekend.

The High Legh observatory will be available for use, while children will be able to see the newly-hatched chickens at Abbey Leys farm shop.

It is also hoped that the new High Legh Park pitch and putt beginner golf course will be open to visitors, as well as the garden centre, bowling and tennis clubs. Famous High Legh Sunday teas, served in the Village Hall for more than 35 years, will also feature, with a flower festival planned at St John’s Church.
