CHESHIRE Police are urging residents to be on their guard for a phone scam.
A member of the public was contacted on his landline by a man claiming to work on behalf of BT from 0208 144 8871.
The caller claimed there had been an issue with the person’s internet security, and unless he followed some instructions to rectify it they would have to disconnect it for two weeks.
The person therefore logged onto his computer and authorised access via ‘teamviewer’.
The caller then accessed several sites visited by the member of the public, and unbeknown to him, attempted to transfer £750 into a Western Union account.
The member of the public’s bank had contacted him while the scam was taking place, and fortunately nothing was taken from his account on this occasion.
