Capenhurst 22-22 Holmes Chapel

TOM Chambers’ try secured a share of the spoils for Holmes Chapel from a visit to promotion-rivals Capenhurst on Saturday.

They left it late – the flanker running unopposed to the line following a smart off-load by captain Dom Moss – but the away team merited a draw.

Andy Davies’ successful conversion ensured that they got one.

His side stays second in North West Intermediate League Division Three South as a result, eight points adrift of leaders Widnes seconds.

The men from Station Road return to action on Saturday week when Marple’s seconds will be their guests.

They started brightly at the weekend, when Davies’ early penalty put them in front.

A try followed when fly-half Andy Fyffe’s pass invited Jim Moss to sprint to the line between the posts.

Davies added the extras to establish a 10-0 lead for the visitors.

Capenhurst rallied, powering over from a scrum to get on the scoreboard.

Back-to-back tries followed, both from rolling mauls after a lineout, to put them 19-10 ahead by the break.

It was Chapel’s turn to fight back, which they did after Connor Gavin powered over from close range.

Capenhurst’s kicker slotted a penalty to make it 22-15 before Chambers’ moment prevented his side from suffering a second league defeat of the season to these opponents.

Chapel’s seconds brushed aside Congleton thirds in Division Five South.

Skipper Joe Maddock (3), Ed Meyrick (2), Darren Saffill (2) and Jim Bowbeer were among their try-scorers in a 61-5 success.

They visit neighbours Knutsford this Saturday, kick off 2.15pm.
