A ONE-OFF film about Manchester’s Haçienda club is set for screening at Knutsford’s Curzon.

‘Do you own the dancefloor?’, created and directed by Chris Hughes from Bolton, tells the story of the legendary nightclub after its demolition in 2002.

As a first time director, Chris told the Guardian that he wanted to use the film for a good cause, donating the money from the March screening to Cancer Research and Kidneys for Life.

He came up with the idea after buying a piece of the Haçienda at auction, and became interested in the stories of the other people who had bought a piece of Manchester’s history.

Chris said: “I love hearing about people who are passionate about anything, they’re the most interesting kind of people. And people who own parts of the Haçienda. I’ve found have such great stories to tell, that they tell with such passion.

“After the first interview we just wanted to meet more and more of them to hear why they felt they wanted to own part of a nightclub.

“I’ve had messages and photos from people from all over the world who have items such as Australia, Miami, Montreal, London and Vancouver.”

Chris enlisted the help of Knutsfordian, Paul Langley, who offered to put him in touch with big names on the Manchester music scene.

The film includes interviews with DJ Dave Haslam and Brit-pop sensation, Liam Gallagher, both of whom signed a contract to take payment in the form of a box of Chris’s wife’s homemade cookies.

“The film didn’t cost me much,” he said. “Most people did it for free. My wife made cookies for everyone involved. It was in the contact to accept a box of artisan cookies.

“There are so many passionate people out there for who the Haçienda was a huge part of their lives. I didn’t actually go there that much- it became more important to me when I bought a piece of the dancefloor, and even more so now I have made the film.”

The focus, although it touches on the history of the club, predominantly interviews people affected by their times there.

Interviewees include Haçienda DJs Graeme Park and Mike Pickering, Liam Gallagher of Oasis and Peter Hook of Joy Division/New Order.

The event will be hosted by Clint Boon and Peter Hook will also be on a question and answer panel following the screening.

Screening is March 1. For more information visit doyouownthedancefloor.co.uk
