PUBGOERS in Mobberley could find a quirky addition to their local after a wood sculptor carved three meerkats into a tree stump.

Andy Burgess, 42, was asked to work on a cherry tree stump at The Railway Inn, in Station Road, where he often takes his young family to enjoy the pub’s wooded grounds and play area.

“The initial idea came from Tony Davies, the pub’s landlord, to bring a bit of humour to the carving of the tree,” he said.

“We felt that we would try to do something a bit different and quirky with it, so I came up with the idea of the three meerkats.

“My job is to make tree stumps into something which people can enjoy.”

The three meerkats are a nod to Mobberley and the pub itself, with one watching the planes fly over from Manchester Airport, one having a drink at the bar, and the third bowling on the pub’s green.

Andy completed the carving on Wednesday, October 19, after four days working on the display.

He said: “A lot of people came out to see what I was doing, and were asking me what I was making.

“Since it’s been finished it has had some great feedback, and people have found it humorous.”
