A CHESHIRE devolution deal and elected mayor could be back on the cards.
Government proposals for a devolution deal between Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC), Cheshire East Council, and Warrington Borough Council were submitted earlier this year, with plans to have an elected mayor for Cheshire.
However, the proposals hit a stumbling block when Warrington Borough Council’s labour councillors voted against the deal.
Warrington Council’s leader Cllr Terry O’Neill, has now confirmed that after internal discussions, the council is ‘now in agreement’ to go ahead with a devolution, but there is still some disagreement whether a deal with Cheshire or Liverpool would be more preferable.
Cllr O’Neill said: "We are now in agreement that the model of devolved powers from Whitehall, together with an elected mayor, is the most appropriate arrangement for our borough.
"We will continue our conversations with other local authorities and Government to ensure we have the best set of benefits to support the long-term future of the borough and the best outcomes for our residents and businesses."
