A KNUTSFORD voluntary group is campaigning for a new ‘safer’ crossing across the River Lily to the Moor.

Friends of The Moor, which has joined in the crossing of the Lily, is hoping to get the bridge replaced which links King Street car park to Moorside.

Members of the public are being urged to send in their design ideas to the group.

Debbie Jamison, chairman of FoTM said: “We are looking to the future with an aim to improve the crossing from King Street car park.

“The bridge is not of Viking heritage but it is old enough to be replaced to make things easier for pushchairs, wheelchairs and generally a safer crossing point to the Moor.”

Friends of the Moor has approached Knutsford Town Council to see what options are available for upgrading the bridge.

Adam Keppel-Garner, town council clerk, said: “This is something Friends of the Moor have raised previously with us. We are looking to see whether we would be able to get funding to do something about it.

“Cheshire East Council has said that they have no capital funds for it as the bridge is still fully functional.

“It is more likely that any refurbishment of the crossing will have to be self-funded, but we are currently looking to see if there are certain funds to make it more accessible and more attractive.”

FoTM members were recently seen getting their feet wet to help publicise the free Knutsford Promenades community event on Saturday, September 10, which will invite people to come and complete the famous crossing that was, in legend, made by King Canute during his reign as King of England.
