OVER Ward residents received a visit from Knutsford MP, George Osborne, as he handed over the keys for a new community minibus.

On Wednesday, August 10, Mr Osborne visited The Welcome café, in Longridge, to present the Knutsford Community Transport Association with the keys to the vehicle, which is government funded.

Jane Webster, Chair of the KCTA- which is a voluntary organisation providing transport for deprived residents in Knutsford, met with the Tatton MP to mark the occasion.

Mr Osborne said: “The Knutsford Community Transport Association volunteers provide a lifeline to vulnerable residents in the more socially and economically deprived parts of our community.

“I am glad that the Department for Transport has funded a much-needed new bus so they can keep this vital service running and allow even more local people to volunteer their services as drivers.”

KCTA’s old minibus, a 2002 registered Mercedes Sprinter, was in need of replacement due to rising maintenance costs.

It was decided that a lighter and ‘more practical’ minibus which requires only a normal driving licence, couple increase the number of volunteer drivers, as well as opening up opportunities for residents of Over Ward to volunteer.

In 2014 the group applied for one of 300 Department of Transport minibuses, which were offered to community organisations, and was successful in its bid.

“KCTA is expecting that the new minibus will be attractive and affordable to many non-profit making community and voluntary groups in Knutsford,” added Jane. “All groups whose activities are aimed at benefitting the education or health and social welfare or recreation or religious observance of their members are welcome to join.”
