I write concerning the news that a Domino’s Pizza branch is set to open in Knutsford.
I object to this on a number of levels, not least because of its location on a major thoroughfare.
Knutsford has a reputation as being a great place to visit to shop or eat in independent businesses.
The siting of a Domino’s pizza on a major route through Knutsford with no-doubt garish signage will diminish this view for passers-by and discourage them from stopping to explore the town further.
I know there is a number of large chains in the town already, but that does not mean that we need more, and certainly not one that, in my view, cheapens the feel of the town to passers-by.
Secondly, it is a positive that local people are employed by large chains with local presences.
However with a local employer there is a much greater chance that the profits will be spent in the town and surrounding area as well, rather than lining the pockets of the faceless investors that own corporate businesses.
