PLANS for a water sports and outdoor activity centre in Chelford have been rejected by Cheshire East Council.

Councillors agreed to object to the proposals based on recommendations from wildlife specialists and Manchester Airport during a planning meeting this morning, Wednesday.

Main concerns raised by councillors included maintaining the site and keeping the grass short could result in larger birds being attracted to the area and the potential threat of an increase in bird strikes near the airport with Canada geese.

Cheshire Lakes Community Interest Company submitted the application at the former Hanson Quarry in the village.

The proposal included two existing lakes, created as part of the quarry’s restoration plan following its closure.

The north lake would have housed a wire pulley system to enable wakeboarding, as well as an aerial activity course. T

he south lake would have been used for open water swimming, paddle boarding and canoeing.

More to follow.
