A KNUTSFORD head teacher has come runner up in a global education award.

Alison Hooper, head at Egerton Primary School in Bexton Road, has been recognised for her work around global learning with a shortlisting for Global Educator of the Year.

The annual award from Think Global celebrates individuals who have gone ‘above and beyond’ in raising young people’s awareness of the new UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Alison has been involved in setting up links between 33 different schools in Cheshire East and Kenya, and led a number of visits for teachers.

She has also developed and sustained a partnership with link school Egerton Primary School in Njoro, Kenya, establishing the Egerton Schools’ foundation to enhance the quality of educational experiences of the children and the wider communities of both schools.

Most recently, Alison visited Kenya in February to share teacher training on the SDGs with 15 partner schools.

“Being shortlisted for this award was a massive surprise and a huge honour as there are some amazing practitioners and leaders working in schools and for NGOs that are doing a great job in delivering global learning in the right way,” said Alison.

“Our children are great thinkers. They confidently ask questions, show high levels of curiosity and at Egerton are actively encouraged to consider all aspects of learning about the world they live in.

“It is for this reason that our thematic curriculum is strongly focused on developing those skills necessary for our children to make sense of this rapidly changing world they live in – this is Global Learning at its best.”

Alison was among only five in the UK to be shortlisted for the award.
