A KNUTSFORD couple has arranged a silent auction to help raise funds for the new Scout headquarters by selling off a unique gift from George Osborne.

Colin Banks, of Boothfields, along with his wife Christine are inviting people to bid on a bottle of House of Commons 2014 Merlot signed by the Chancellor of the Exchequer and Tatton MP.

Christine’s 12-year-old son Nicky and 15-year-old daughter Lilly-Ann are members of the Knutsford scouting community, and during Mr Osborne’s election campaign the couple sent an email to gain support for the hut.

The couple were delighted to receive a response saying that he had left his donation at the Tatton Constituency office for them to use in their auction.

“I would hope that someone would pay at least £100 for it,” said Colin. “He is the local MP and the Chancellor so there should be plenty of people interested in it.

“My step-son is in the 1st Knutsford scouts and I got involved with helping out at some of the events. We do a family BBQ to help raise funds for them.

“I think the Scouts movement is a really great community asset and it is important to encourage children to get involved in activities not just sit and play on the Xbox all day long.”

The silent auction is open from now until March 31, and Colin is encouraging people to send their offers before the closing date.

Mr Osborne visited the 1st Knutsford Scouts in March 2015 to meet the groups and learn more about the plans to re-build on the current site on the Moor.

He said: “As an honorary Knutsford Scout leader I am proud to back the fundraising efforts for the much needed new Scout hut on the Moor.

“I have seen the plans for myself and these fantastic new facilities will benefit the entire community.”

To send in a bid contact Colin on 01565 654100 or email colin.banks77@virginmedia.com

The couple are also hosting a fundraising chilli and quiz night at Knutsford Tennic Club on February 12 from 7pm.

Tickets are £7.50 for adults and £5 for children.
