KNUTSFORD Academy was transformed into an operating theatre as students took part in ‘Operating Theatre Live’.

On Thursday, January 21 students from Years Seven and Eight were invited to take part in a unique workshop to give them an insight into real life surgery.

The students were selected on their interests in science and technology as well as those considering a career in medicine.

Ryan Walker from the Academy said: “We wanted provide a unique opportunity for our most dedicated and ambitious students to have the chance to experience at first-hand what it is like to work in the medical profession.”

Students were given the scientific insight behind procedures, which was coupled with practical tasks undertaken on pigs' organs.

The overall aim of the day was to enable students to get an early insight in their education into a professional career.

The students were fully dressed for an operating theatre and performed a number of surgical procedures including Angioplasty and a heart transplant.

James Kerr from Year Eight, said: “This has been a great experience, I particularly enjoyed how my learning on the day could be applied straight away with hands on practical tasks.”

Operating Theatre Live, which has been running since 2012, specialises in inspiring young people ‘to follow their dream career.’

Sam Piri from Operating Theatre live who ran the workshop said “The students have been absolutely fantastic, lots of willing volunteers and really keen to learn, we have really enjoyed identifying a number of potential surgeons and leaders of the future.”
