FOLLOWING the annual rumours that Harry Styles will be turning on this year’s Knutsford Christmas lights, the town council has now revealed the special guest will be the mayor, Cllr Tony Dean.

Social media speculation for the past few years has suggested that the One Direction heartthrob could be in line to flip the big switch, but once again he will not be leading the town’s festivities.

Past guests include Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, BBC Radio Two DJ Mark Radcliffe, Sir Bobby Charlton and cricketer Farokh Engineer.

Adam Keppel-Garner, the town clerk, explained how the council struggled to find a celebrity for this year’s light switch on and that it decided to opt for the mayor.

The annual festivities, including the Christmas market, return to Princess Street on Saturday November 28 from 12pm to 7pm and Sunday November 29 from 11am to 5pm.

Entertainment for the lights switch on will begin from 4pm with performances from school choirs, SMB Dance, Tatton Singers, Josh Whittaker, Rokit Performing Arts and local band Three Wise Men.

The lights will be switched on at around 6.30pm.

Road closures will be in place across the weekend. On Saturday there will be a rolling road closure along King St from 3.45pm to 4.30pm to enable Santa and his reindeer to parade through the town.

Canute Place will be closed from 12pm to 8pm on Saturday to enable the stage to be set up for the light switch on.
