PLANS have been submitted to refurbish part of a 17th century hall in Mobberley.

The plans have been submitted to Cheshire East Council for the works on Grade 2 listed Newton Hall.

The works include proposed extensions to and part refurbishment of the hall including the replacement of existing garages, alterations to the main house and former coach house and a new extension to include a pool and a new kitchen.

The application states that the replacement of the garages is to respond to the existing coach house and to align with the axis of the existing building.

A heritage report prepared for the applicant William Lomas, by Jenny Wetton Conservation, states that the impact of the majority of the work would be largely beneficial.

The report concludes: "The house dates from the mid to late 17th century set in front of what may be an earlier house and has been through many phases of extension and with many phases of extension and with the only original part now visible externally on the rear elevation and features visible internally.

"It is considered to be of high significance and the setting makes an overall positive contribution to the significance to the listed building although the 21st century garages, the day room and the front entrance surround are negatively affecting its significance."

The report adds: "With the presumption in favour of sustainable development, the proposals are considered to be compliant with national and local planning policy."

The hall which was built between 1634 and 1676 for Francis Newton with additions to the original structure in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Comments on the application should be submitted to Cheshire East Council before December 9.
