A KNUTSFORD councillor is hoping to tackle dangerous driving by urging residents in the Norbury Booths ward to join a neighbourhood speedwatch group.

Cllr Charlotte Greenstein, who is serving her first term as a town councillor, is hoping that people will sign up to help monitor Goughs Lane.

Two years ago, Cllr Greenstein campaigned as a resident to reduce the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph on the lane which lies between Toft Road (A50) and Chelford Road (A537).

“Most drivers adhere to the set speed limit now, but there are still a good too many who exceed the 30mph limit on the lane,” said Cllr Greenstein. “Considering that Goughs Lane is fully residential and has no pavements, it’s astounding that some drivers speed down this narrow road.

"I'm hoping to inspire people from my ward to join in this group.

“My kids ride their bikes on this road. I would love for residents of the Legh Road Conservation Area to join too. I run down Legh Road most days and probably a third of the cars exceed the 30mph limit.”

“I want the towns' children and other pedestrians to be safe. When I was campaigning as an Independent for Knutsford Town Council, I said that if I was successful I would look at road safety in the town. So that’s what I’m doing.”

The group will be trained by Knutsford PCSO Chris Munro, who will show members how to be safe on the road, how to effectively use a speed gun, and how to report speeding drivers to the police.

“The local police seem to think that individual Speedwatch groups are the way forward in combatting this everyday crime. In a town like ours, the police can’t be on the arterial roads 24/7,” Cllr Greenstein added.

“I think a Speedwatch Group is a great way to feel involved, to feel like you’re not helpless and to gain some satisfaction in letting speeding drivers know how anti-social and potentially lethal they can be.”

A training session will be held at Knutsford police station on Monday November 30 at 6pm.
