KNUTSFORDIANS have a rare opportunity to enjoy a play based on Elizabeth Gaskell's novella, The Moorland Cottage in the town this week.

The play will take place Thursday, November 26 in Brook Street Chapel as part of the Gaskell Society's festival of commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the author's death.

'Moorland Cottage' was adapted for the stage by Robin Allan and Noel Cornes of Brook Street Chapel is directing the players, Barbara Steel, Paula Martin, Jo Prescott, Beulah Cornes, Bob Homer, George Shirtcliffe and John Davies.

The play will be in two parts, with a break in between for music from the Victorian era performed by Joan and Alan Dean on violin and keyboard.

It will be performed in the atmospheric surroundings of the Grade 1 listed Chapel where Elizabeth Gaskell worshipped and is buried in its grounds.

'Moorland Cottage' tells the story of the Browne family - Mrs Browne, the widow of a clergyman, and her two children, Edward and Maggie, who live a modest life. It looks at the relationship between Edward and Maggie and Frank, the son of their near neighbours, the Buxtons.

A surprising series of events occur, putting everyone under strain, particularly the gentle and unassuming Maggie.

Tickets for 'Moorland Cottage' at Brook Street Chapel on Thursday, November 26, 7.30pm to 9.30pm cost just £5 and are available from Beulah Cornes, 01565 632673, or Pam Griffiths, 01565 651761, or pay on the door.

Access to the chapel can be arranged via the lift inside the chapel school rooms on Adams Hill.

Proceeds in aid of the Chapel Repair Fund and refreshments will be available in the school rooms after the performance
