KNUTSFORD Heritage Centre are inviting people to embark a journey of self-discovery as they host a new memoir-writing course.

The sessions, which will run for eight-weeks are to be led by Sarah Ganczarski, a Heritage Centre volunteer with a Masters in Creative Writing and a former career in literary publishing.

Sarah, whose pen name is Sarah Leigh, is a member of the National Association of Writers in Education and has a number of accolades to her name including having a story published in the Cheshire Anthology.

She said: “Memoir writing is like dipping into a life. I have always been influenced by thinking about how you live your life. If each of us left a 2,000 word piece about what life meant to us, then that is a marvellous thing to leave. It says ‘this was me. I was not just a name and a date.’

“Everyone who came to my course last time achieved a collection of pieces of a life. It is something to leave behind, experiences to share and memories to keep.

“Everyone has got it within them. It is very rewarding.”

Sarah came up with the idea after volunteering for the Heritage centre, she wanted to be able to offer more support but was unsure what to offer.

After thinking about ways in which she could contribute to the centre, Sarah decided to draw on her previous experience as a literary agent and writing student to offer her services to those interested in creating their own pieces.

Val Bryant, a volunteer in charge of archives and exhibitions at the Heritage Centre, said: “This will be a good opportunity to get people from Knutsford involved in these classes and write about their memories. The Heritage Centre would value these memories to keep in the archive at the Centre for further generation to come.

The course will run at the centre on Monday mornings from 10am to 12pm for eight weeks beginning on Monday October 26,

The price of the course is £55 which includes refreshments and it is open to people of all ages. There are only 12 places and it is first come first served.
