FOLLOWING the rise in distraction burglaries in the area, police are now urging residents to stay alert to doorstep crime.

The message is: ‘If you’re unsure, close the door’.

On October 1, Cheshire Police joined up with four local authorities to raise awareness of rogue traders, holding a day of action.

Police are warning residents that there could be links between rogue traders and those who commit distraction burglaries, and that offenders often travel large distances in order to commit crime.

Inspector Ian Stead said, “Many door to door sellers are genuine, however, it is important that residents check the identity of cold callers, and do not allow themselves to be pressurised into any sales they’re unsure about.

“Doorstep crime can have a devastating impact on victims both financially and emotionally. I want to reiterate that Cheshire Police do not tolerate this type of crime and we’re here for our communities when and where you need us.

“Yesterday’s day of action was successful with officers stop checking suspicious individuals across the county and dealing with them in the correct way. All of the organisations also spoke to legitimate traders, with Trading Standards offering a number of businesses advice and guidance.”

Some of the main advice given by police is to check the identity of doorstep traders, to not feel pressured to agree to or sign anything, and to never give out cash upfront or go to a cash machine with a doorstep trader.

Anyone with information about rogue traders is urged to contact Cheshire Police on 101, or 999 if there is a crime in progress.

Alternatively information can be left anonymously via Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
