AN ARLEY doctor has raised more than £4,000 for a children’s charity after taking part in a gruelling 100 mile bike ride.

59-year-old Dr Brendon Smith from Kennels Green completed the London to Surrey race with his son Dan in less than 6 hours, beating his fundraising target by more than £1,000.

Brendon, who is currently working as a locum across the town, took on the famous ‘Prudential Ride’ on August 2 to raise money for ‘Children with Cancer’.

He chose the charity after spending 30 years working as a family GP with sick and terminally ill children.

Brendon said: “It was fantastic. I got no punctures, no mechanical problems and the weather was gorgeous.

“We are dead chuffed, we have raised over £4,200 and the money is still coming in. All in all it was a very memorable day.”

Setting off from the iconic Olympic park in London, Brendon and Dan then travelled through the Surrey countryside, taking on some of the county’s most daunting hills before returning through Wimbledon and down the Mall.

“It was great doing it with my son,” said Brendon. “He stayed with me the whole time and as I ran out of energy in the last 10 or so miles, he kept me going and we managed to climb Leith Hill and Box Hill without getting off our bikes!!

“The best part of the journey was coming down the Mall. The support was amazing. People lined the streets for the last 10 to 15 miles.

“To top it all off my wife and daughter, and her fiancée were at the finishing line. It really was something.

“I would like to take this opportunity in thanking everyone for their support and generous donations to Children with Cancer UK.”

The pair, who only started cycling last year, have now recovered and are planning which challenge to take on next.
