The return of tall ships to Greenwich will have an estimated net cost of nearly £1.8m, council documents have revealed.
Greenwich hosted the Tall Ships Regatta in 2014, with its budget spiralling from to £1.74m from an initial estimate of just £175,000.
But the council says that event brought 1.1 million visitors to the area, crediting them with generating £17m in economic activity, and so has decided to host the next event in 2017.
This time, the council says the regatta will cost £2.08m, bringing in an income of £377,400. For that reason, officers have put forward a total budget of £1.79m.
In a document to be discussed on July 22 at a cabinet meeting, officers also warn that annual events and their funding "may need to be reviewed to ensure symmetry" with the regatta.
The international event will start begin in Greenwich, with vessels berthed there from April 13 to April 16.
