GOOSTREY'S train station is set to bloom once again after a volunteer group struck a deal with rail bosses for them to provide a water supply to the platform.

At the 'Best Kept Station Awards' in January this year, the village's station was named as the 'most improved station' in Cheshire.

But members of the volunteer group, 'Friends of Goostrey Station' (FOGS) want to do more to make it a place that the whole village can be proud of.

The water supply to the station was cut off 20 years ago when the station became unmanned. FOGS offered to pay the majority of the cost of re-installing water at the station and Northern Rail agreed to fund the cost of installing a water pipe and tap.

However, at a performance of 'Over by Christmas' at Goostrey in September 2014, FOGS mounted a protest about the slow progress Northern Rail was making with its part of the work.

Goostrey Parish Council met with Northern Rail and MP Fiona Bruce and Matthew Worman from the train operator committed to completing the water supply by the Spring.

Cyril Caulkin, chairman of FOGS, said: "This excellent news has boosted the morale of our volunteers who were losing heart.

"Now we know water is coming soon, we are having a resurgence of interest in our support for our monthly action days.

"We are unable to do any more planting at the station until we are able to water the plants we buy. We plan to have tubs of flowers on the platforms and more vegetation on the banks around the station."

FOGS working parties meet between 10am and 1pm on the second Sunday of each month.
