WEST triumphed over East on Sunday as Goostrey residents cheered on young and old in a fundraising football match.

The 11-a-side game was organised by villager David Hext, who runs Goostrey Friendly Football Club, and took place at Goostrey playing fields.

It was staged to support the appeal for the new Goostrey Scout Hut and Youth Centre, and pitted teams from the east and west of the village against each other.

The players ranged in age from 15 to 60, and west edged out their opponents 4-3 on penalties after fighting back from 4-1 down at the interval to level the match.

The annual game was held for the first time last year in memory of Simon Weston, who lived in Goostrey and ran the Friendly Football Club.

Last year’s game raised £300 for mental health charity Mind, and this year’s match raised a similar sum for the Scout hut and youth centre.

Simon’s widow Susie presented trophies to David as the coach of the winning team and David’s son Charlie, nine, the captain of the winning team in a penalty shoot-out he organised at half-time.

The money was raised from the half-time shoot-out, a collection and Scouts burger and hot dog stalls.

“We had a really good day, and it was a great community event and a social occasion,” said David.

“I would like to thank the Scout leaders for their work organising the stalls and collections, and it’s nice to remember Simon in this way as he was such an inspirational character.”

Goostrey Scouts rolled up their sleeves to help raise more than £3,500 the previous weekend for the Scout Hut and Youth Centre.

The money raised by a Scout car wash and sponsored Big Bike Ride took the total raised for the £200,000 target to more than £33,000.

On Saturday, May 9 £600 was raised at a car wash at the Crown Inn on Main Road. David Giles, Group Scout Leader for 1st Goostrey Scouts, said: “I was impressed by the enthusiasm and determination of our team of Scout volunteers at the car wash.

“I wish to thank all the Scouts, Scout Leaders, helpers and parents who collaborated to wash about 100 cars over more than six hours, and a big thank you also to all the drivers who brought their grubby cars to be washed.”

The following day the sponsored Big Bike Ride by Goostrey Wheelers raised £3,000 for the appeal.

Sixty people from Goostrey, including most of the Wheelers, took part in a 55-mile cycle challenge around the leafy lanes of Cheshire.

David said: “I would like to pay tribute to Goostrey Wheelers, the cycling group in Goostrey, who raised more than their target of £2,000 – with more sponsorship promised to come in.

“Goostrey Wheelers are very much involved with the village community and are a great source of support for the Scouts in getting the new Scout Hut and Youth Centre built.”
