A WATER tower in High Legh is set to become the star of the small screen after a popular Channel 4 show decided to showcase its transformation.

The water tower in Warrington Road sold at auction for £280,000 in March 2013, with approved plans to transform it into a unique four-bedroom home with a conservatory and garage.

It was the end of an era for the water tower, which was built in 1938 to help improve local water pressure. The water tower became redundant when United Utilities built a new pumping station at Bucklow Hill.

Mellor Braggins also sold the neighbouring water tower cottage to a different bidder for £331,000 at the same auction at Cottons Hotel in Manchester Road, meaning United Utilities pocketed more than £600,000 from its sale.

Stories suggest that during the Second World War an anti-aircraft gun was stationed on the roof of the tower overlooking and protecting the former army camp, which has since been replaced by the housing development known as The Belfry.

But now the tower is set to feature in George Clarke's 'Restoration Man' programme.

George has already made a couple of visits to the tower, with the first part of filming taking place shortly after the tower was sold at auction in 2013.

The producers of the show are now looking for historical information on the water tower and would like to speak to people who have memories of the building and the High Legh area.

A spokesperson for production company Tiger Aspect said: "Perhaps you or one of your relatives worked at the tower or for Bucklow Rural District Council?

"Are there any family stories, photos or artefacts relating to the tower? Do you know about the guns mounted on top of the tower during World War Two?

"We are also looking for old photos of High Legh and the surrounding area."

'Restoration Man' has been on Channel 4 for three series and features renovations of neglected properties across the country.

High Legh water tower will feature on the programme in January 2016.
