A YEAR of celebrations are set to take place throughout Knutsford next year to commemorate a millennium since King Canute’s reign over England.

The ‘Canute Millennial’ plans, which are being designed by the Knutsford Heritage Centre, have received council support following last week’s events committee meeting.

Organisers from Knutsford Heritage Centre hope that the celebrations will raise the profile of Knutsford and attract tourists from across the country.

Adam Keppel-Garner, Knutsford Town Clerk, said: “The council is delighted to be taking a lead with the Heritage Centre to ensure that this important anniversary is celebrated in style; raising the profile of our town and reinforcing the legend of our name.”

As well as boosting tourism, organisers hope that the celebrations will offer a cash boost to the council and the heritage centre.

Celebrations would include the sale of official ‘Canute Millennial’ merchandise, including ceramics, jewellery and clothing which would be sold by participating retailers and the Heritage Centre shop.

Chris Henretty, Chairman of the Knutsford Heritage Centre, said: “Our objective is for creating a cross-community affinity group led by the Town Council and the Heritage Centre to drive forward and co-ordinate the town’s celebrations.

“As well as advantages flowing from promotion and marketing collaboration, the scope for local enterprises, crafts, culture and other community groups is as wide as our collective imaginations.”

Organisers hope to gain involvement from local businesses, who are being invited to send in their own contribution ideas.

“Our initiative is about working together," Chris added.

“It will help to further raise Knutsford’s profile and status as a tourist destination for shopping, eating out and other leisure activity.

“Ideally, we aim to extend collaboration with other places associated with King Canute and the Vikings. These include Durham, Winchester Cathedral (which has Canute’s remains), Ely Cathedral, Cambridge, Oxford (where Canute was crowned), York (Jorvik Viking Centre) and Southampton.

“Such alliances would position Knutsford amongst some of England’s most visited tourist hotspots.”
