A KNUTSFORD man will be helping to light up a mountain in Snowdonia this weekend in memory of his father.

Andrew Malloy, of Thorneyholme Drive, in Knutsford, will be climbing up Tryfan, and helping to light lanterns, in memory of his dad Bill, who died in a tragic accident on the side of the mountain in 2005.

Bill Malloy, from Middlewich, had been walking with a party of six from his home town of Middlewich on Sunday, April 17, 2005, when he fell close to clusters of rocks known as Adam and Eve near the snow-covered summit of Tryfan, above the Ogwen Valley.

The event on Friday, April 17, will commemorate 50 years of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation and Andrew told the Guardian the climb would be 'quite emotional' with it taking place on the 10th anniversary of his father's death.

"My dad was an experienced walker and climber, went out to climb Tryfan, one of the more difficult mountains to climb in Snowdonia, with a group of friends," he said.

"He reached the top, and had a great time, but the weather was bad, and drawing in, so they started to make their way down the mountain. My Dad was bringing up the rear, but as the others in his group turned back to talk to him he had slipped, and was just seen disappearing over the edge of the south gully.

"By the time his friends managed to get down to him, it was already too late, and my Dad passed away there on the mountain, probably instantly in the fall.

"The Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue team were called, and one of there team was reasonably close, and set off in their direction. RAF Valley was called, and deployed, but with the weather so bad, they had to carry my Dad a fair way down the mountain to be airlifted to nearby Bangor Hospital.

"Every since the heroic efforts of the OVMRO, I've done what little I can to support them, to help ensure they are there when others may need their help.

"This is going to be quite emotional for me, happening exactly 10 years after my Dad's fatal accident, but I always try to do my little bit for the OVMRO by a small way of repaying their heroic efforts in recovering my Dad, while helping to ensure they are there should anyone else need their help."
