HS2 campaigners are inviting the Parliamentary candidates for the Tatton constituency to “face the voters” at an information event being held in Wincham.

The free event is organised by Mid Cheshire Against HS2 and Pickmere-based One Voice in Cheshire Against HS2, and takes place at Wincham Community Centre on Saturday, April 25.

It runs from 10.30am until midday, and is aimed at informing people about the impact of HS2 on Wincham and Pickmere and the surrounding areas.

Anyone is welcome to drop in, not just Wincham residents, to speak to members of the campaign groups over a cup of coffee.

In the invitation to the candidates, Mid Cheshire Against HS2 member Ewen Simpson said: “HS2 is a very contentious subject in this part of the Tatton constituency.

“A large area of productive countryside on the western edges of Tatton will have to be sacrificed if this project is ever to be built.

“So, we invite you to face the voters of Wincham and Pickmere so that, if you support HS2, they can ask you why they should sacrifice their well-being so rail passengers, including tourists, can reach the north west 20 minutes earlier than if they had used the existing West Coast Main Line. Is 20 minutes worth spending well in excess of £50 billion?

“Likewise, if you are opposed to HS2, this meeting will be a very good forum for you to put your case and your reasons before the voters.”

Wincham Parish Council chairman Annie Makepeace said: “I would encourage everyone to go along to find out more about HS2.

“We need to know what we are facing, and we need people to take advantage of the opportunity of having a venue where they can have their say.

“The more people know the better, and anyone is welcome to attend who is interested and has an opinion. Things are constantly changing, and people need to be aware of these changes.”

Wincham Community Centre is in Church Street, Wincham, coffee will be available, and donations are welcome.
