MOTORISTS are being warned that a short section of the Manchester-bound M56 Manchester carriageway will be closed overnight from tonight for up to four days.

The work will result in the closure of the eastbound carriageway between junction 7 (Hale) and 6 for up to four nights, between 10pm and 5am.

The closure will enable The Highways Agency to add an extra lane on the carriageway at junction 7 as part of a £4.2m project to tackle congestion.

The work once completed, will remove the need for drivers to quickly merge with other traffic.

The work is expected to take three nights but could be extended to four, resulting in a similar closure next Monday evening.

The closure will also affect drivers on the northbound A556 and those wanting to use the roundabout at Bowdon to join the M56 at junction 7.

Drivers will instead be diverted away from the motorway along the northbound A56 and A560 through Altrincham and Timperley respectively and then the eastbound A560 through Baguley to rejoin the M56 at junction 2 at Sharston.

Road users can call the Highways Agency information line on 0300 123 5000.
