A CENTENARIAN marathon runner is calling on Knutsfordians to don their trainers and sign up to Age UK’s 10k and 2k events at Tatton Park.

Fauja Singh, 103, has run nine marathons since the age of 89 and is believed to be the world’s oldest marathon runner.

The great-grandfather still enjoys being active and walks, jogs or runs for at least four hours a day and is encouraging people to sign up to Tatton Park’s event on Sunday March 1.

Fauja said: “I’ve supported Age UK for many years and know just how important their work is in supporting older people to live well and enjoy life. Taking part in their 10k is a way you can help make a huge difference to people in later life, while taking on a fitness challenge of your own this spring, so I would encourage people of all ages and abilities to sign up.”

Funds raised will enable Age UK Cheshire East to provide programmes for older people in the borough, such as its ‘Help at Home’ scheme, and offer services such as information and advice.

Lydia Curran, Head of Events at Age UK, said: “If you feel inspired by Fauja why not give our 10k event a go – you’ll be improving fitness while raising funds to enable the Age UK network to support older people where it’s needed the most, helping to tackle huge issues like loneliness and isolation.”
