THIS is what King Street could look like in the future.

A design concept has been drawn up, which the Guardian has adapted with a picture of King Street, showing how the much talked about enhancement works would transform the street.

And members of the public are being asked for their views on plans to turn one of the busiest streets in the town into a more vibrant public space by upgrading the road and pavements.

Two engagement events, where residents will have the chance to look at the current design concept, look at the materials to be used and speak to the project team, will take place at the Curzon, on Wednesday, December 3, between 4pm and 8pm and Saturday, December 6, between 10am and 4pm.

For those who are unable to attend the engagement events, the design concept will be on show at an exhibition in Knutsford Library from November 29 to December 13.

Andrew Malloy, chairman of the town centre working group in the Knutsford Town Plan, is urging Knutsfordians to go along and see the exhibition at the library.

“I hope as many people as possible will speak to the Cheshire East Officers at the engagement sessions at the Curzon, offering constructive critique, positive or negative,” he said.

“After several years of hard work, and unparalleled engagement by the town plan, this is a real opportunity for Knutsford to get the high street it deserves – now is the time to get it right for everyone.”

Knutsford Town Plan hailed the decision by Knutsford Town Council to spend £15,000 on supporting the study – match funded by Cheshire East – as ‘a real milestone in the history of King Street’.

Since that decision was made in July 2013, traffic and pedestrian footfall surveys have been done and consultations carried out with King Street businesses and property owners.

Some 400 residential properties in and around King Street have been leafleted by members of Knutsford Town Plan and other volunteers to promote the exhibition at Knutsford Library and the engagement events at the Curzon.

Clr Michael Jones, leader of Cheshire East Council, said: “The shops and businesses on King Street are a great asset to Cheshire East and the street merits and deserves enhancement works.

“We want to create a space which will be enjoyed by Knutsford residents while also attracting visitors and enabling businesses in the locality to thrive.

“By better balancing the needs of pedestrians and vehicles, the changes aim to encourage more footfall and more passing trade for businesses.

“I am particularly pleased that local residents have volunteered to use their professional skills to help the council develop these exciting plans.”

It is proposed that the scheme would use ‘high quality materials’ and create a look which complements the architecture of the town and historic setting.

The council added the changes would improve access for people whose mobility is impaired by making the street easier to use and the improvements would seek to retain as much on-street parking as possible.
