AN Allostock couple were given the royal treatment for their Blue Sapphire wedding anniversary.

Army sweethearts Ronald Field, 88, and his wife Jenny, 89, from Princess Road, marked 65 years of wedded bliss on November 19.

Their special day started off with a celebration card from the Queen followed by the surprise arrival of a chauffeur-driven Silver Shadow Rolls Royce.

Hand-in-hand in the back seat, the couple were whisked away for a drive around the lanes of Cheshire before joining their family and friends for a lunch in their honour at the Red Lion in Pickmere.

“It was one of the nicest days we have had – from beginning to end,” said Jenny.

“We had a really lovely time.”

Ron, from Huddersfield in Yorkshire, met Jenny when they were both stationed at Peninsular Barracks in Warrington.

He was in the Royal Army Service Corps and had served in Belgium, India, Japan and Malaya whilst with the 8 company.

Whilst at Warrington he was attached to the 4th Ack Ack Group and Jenny was in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, the women's branch of the British Army during the Second World War.

They married at Lower Peover Church in 1949 before settling down in Allostock, where they have lived for most of their married life.

They have three children, Alison, Ronnie and Julie, and two grandchildren, Katie and Jack.

As they celebrated the momentous milestone, the couple offered some wise words on the secret to a long, happy marriage.

Ronald said: “During our years together we have had our ups and down, as all marriages do, but we got through them and love found a way.

“When you are young you don’t think of 65 years ahead but now you just give thanks for a loving, happy, healthy family and being together.”

“If you pick the right boy or girl and be good to each other, it will last,” added Jenny.

The couple have another big celebration around the corner - Jenny will be turning 90 next Wednesday, December 3.

Jenny, who was born Jane Bentley, grew up at Portobello Cottage, now Shamrock Cottage, on Fox Covert Lane in Lower Peover.

She, along with her brothers Charlie and Frank, attended Lower Peover School, in what is now The Little House Montessori Nursery.
