TWO Knutsford sisters have returned from a gruelling 450km bike ride in China to raise money for women with cancer – and are continuing their fundraising back on home soil.

Vanessa Ashton, 46, and Bernadette Gunter, 49, got on two wheels for Women V Cancer’s Cycle China event from September 5 to 13.

A total of 101 women from around the world took part in the six-day challenge, which involved cycling up to 102km a day through the dizzying heights of Beijing’s mountains and along the Great Wall of China.

The aim of the event was to raise money for three charities; Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action. The participants surpassed their fundraising expectations by raising £405,000 – with funds still coming through daily.

Vannessa said: “It wasn’t fun. There were a lot of things you had to put up with; the heat, the exhaustion, no cold water. But it was the best thing I have ever done.

“The hardest thing is asking for money but people have been so generous, most people don’t even hesitate.”

Cycle China was Vanessa’s first Women V Cancer event but it wasn’t Bernadette’s. The grandmother-of-four participated in a similar challenge in India in 2012. Since then she has become dedicated to raising money for the charity, along with her sister.

Bernadette said: “All of the money goes direct to the charities. It’s not going to a big corporation, they are small charities and they really benefit from the money raised. I just really believe in it.”

Now back on home soil, the pair are determined to raise even more money for the cause. On November 15 - 16, 22 - 23, and 29 - 30, a Women V Cancer raffle stall will be in place at Fryer’s Rose nursery on Manchester Road.

The raffle is being sponsored by Fryer’s and a variety of Knutsford businesses have donated prizes.

The sisters are seeking help will selling the tickets on the aforementioned dates. Anyone who can help, or any business wishing to donate a prize, should email vanessa.ashton68@gmail.com.
