THE Lord Chancellor has rung the death knell on Knutsford Crown Court.

On October 21, HM Courts & Tribunals Service announced that the Lord Chancellor has taken the decision to permanently close Knutsford Crown Court, on Toft Road, following a recent consultation.

The consultation received a total of 14 responses, including representations Knutsford Town Council, Knutsford Town Planning Group, Knutsford Conservation and Heritage Group, and residents.

There were no objections to the proposal to close Knutsford Crown Court and the more specific comments received were in relation to the future use of the Sessions House if the court were to be closed.

One resident, Joe Godden, said: β€œIt makes eminent sense, I am a Knutsford resident and have been concerned for a while about the costs and waste of such a large building that is unused. There is the potential to use the site for much needed housing, particularly social housing.”

The Ministry of Justice are yet to make a decision whether to sell the building or not, although such an intention was made clear in the consultation document.

All comments about the future use of the building have been submitted for the consideration of the Ministry of Justice Estates, who will lead with the next steps.
