A KNUTSFORD club that has spent 10 years listening to the stars from the world of science is set to mark a special anniversary next month.

Knutsford SciBar meets on the first Monday of every month in the town, where guests and members are treated to talks from leading lights from the world of science.

Dave Thompson set up the club in 2004 after being persuaded to do so by a friend.

"After retiring I was running an evening class at the high school called 'Fascinating Science'," he said.

"One day I cam home from somewhere else and said to my wife, 'why don't go to Paris and drink some good wine' but she told me we couldn't because of my class. So I decided at the end of term I would stop that as it was interfering with my life too much.

"One of the members of the class went to a meeting and came round to my house to persuade me to set up a SciBar.

"I had almost set up a Cafe Scientifique, which is very similar.

"My biggest issue when I set it up was would there be enough people in Knutsford that would be interested but clearly there were."

The club regularly supports Knutsford's schools, often visiting and showing children how to make mini rockets and promoting science in general.

Changing venues has meant attendees have dipped slightly in recent years, but at its height the club was attracting almost 80 members a month.

"We were the first SciBar in the area but now there are about 10," Dave added.

"At first we were getting people travelling from Wales for the meetings.

"We don't treat the meetings like a subject, we get the best person in their field in to speak and they are only allowed to speak for 30 minutes. Our audiences can be made up of professors or people with no knowledge of the subject. The issue is making sure you don't bore people or don't blow their mind! "

The 10th anniversary meeting will take place at Knutsford Sports Club on Mereheath Lane on Monday, November 3.

Andrew Greenwood from the Macclesfield Astronomical Society will be showcasing the beauty of the sky.

This will be followed by a buffet which will in turn be followed by a 'Science quiz' for which the prize, for the winner, is a bottle of champagne.

The cost of the evening will be £10 per head but it drops back to £1 for the December 1 Scibar.
