PUPILS of Bexton Primary School stepped back in time to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War last month.

From September 15 to 19, children participated in a variety of learning opportunities to bring to life the history and conflict of The Great War.

Children from across the school engaged in hands-on workshops lead by Darren Birchall a.k.a Mr B and children’s author John Mala, a.k.a Corporal Frederick Horsnell, who were both dressed in authentic army uniforms.

The children learned more about what the soldiers endured, first aid skills in the trenches, marching, singing and drama.

They also looked at historical evidence including letters from soldiers, uniforms, medals and researched soldiers from the Knutsford area who sacrificed their lives in the conflict.

Artyfact Theatre group gave a performance of life during the war and one of the parents, Lieutenant Colonel Miles Hayman, discussed how the army has evolved and compared life in the trenches to the army of today.

The children finished off the week by dressing up in World War One costumes and enjoyed a variety of workshops lead by Bexton staff.

“It has been a truly inspirational and an outstanding approach to learning,” reflected Headteacher Mr Dolan.
