A WANTED gangster who drove the wrong way down a busy Knutsford street to evade capture by police has been jailed for eight years and seven months.

Mohammed Khan, 41, of Glendoven Place, Whitefield, Manchester, was wanted by police for his involvement in a multi-million pound drug-bust in Bradford when he was apprehended in Knutsford earlier this year.

At 5.45pm on January 24, Knutsford officers attempted to stop a white Audi S5 that Khan was driving on Toft Road.

Khan tried to make off by driving the wrong way through traffic lights adjacent to Knutsford Police Station along Bexton Lane, forcing rush hour traffic and commuters to take evasive action.

The vehicle stopped on Bexton Lane and Khan attempted to run away but was arrested by officers.

On Friday September 12, Khan appeared at Bradford Crown Court with five other gang members.

Khan had already pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing in relation to conspiracy to supply heroin to a value of £5.5million.

The court was told that 29.8kilos of heroin, 78 grams of cocaine and £116,000 of crack cocaine had been found at an address in Bradford on February 12 2013.

Police used camera surveillance and also tracked the gang using mobile phone activity, which began on January 29, 2013.

The gang were traced around a host of locations including Bradford, Harrogate, Barnsley and Manchester.

Jailing the gang for more than 60 years, Judge Peter Benson said: "In my view, this was the most substantial quantity of drugs to unleash on the streets of West Yorkshire, including a very, very substantial amount of heroin.

"Most of the defendants were arrested at the same time as the flat was raided."

Khan was sentenced to eight years and seven months, with the ring-leader of the gang being handed a 17-year prison sentence.

A second man, aged 41, who was with Khan at the time of his arrest and who also attempted to make off from the Audi was arrested for unrelated matters close by on Summers Way in Knutsford.

He is currently on police bail pending further inquiries.
